Combative Wrestling was UWW's attempt to get into the MMA market. If you pad wrestlers in striking gear and tell them, no biting, or poking, and put them on a mat, you can expect some crazy battles. At the 2011 Combat Games, this happened for the only known time. Roughly 30 matches were held in this, nearly, no holds barred form of fighting. Bloody noses were common, but, surprisingly, few major injuries were reported. The competitors coming, primarily' from Russia, The USA and Ukraine. The difficulties came in with the untested scoring system. Fighters and their coaches were unsure of the scoring. Takedowns, guard, and punches were all scored. The three refs around the mat had a very difficult job and several matches had to be refought.
These images were taken with an 80-200 lens mounted on a Nikon D-300. The natural light that came in the windows near the ceiling added nice highlights to the images.
