LAS VEGAS, October 8, 2026 - Las Vegas is built on odds, wagers, and the chance to make history. But when Kylie Welker steps onto the mat at the 2026 U23 World Championships, the two-time defending champion won't rely on Lady Luck.

Welker returns to the world stage with a chance to do what no women's freestyle wrestler has done before: win three consecutive U23 world championships. After claiming gold at 72 kg in 2024 and moving up to win the 76 kg title in 2025, Welker is putting everything on the line for a third straight championship, this time on home soil in Las Vegas.

Given the hand she brings to the table, betting against her might be a risky proposition.

The 22-year-old Wisconsin native and University of Iowa standout captured her second consecutive U23 world championship last October in Novi Sad, Serbia, dominating the 76 kg field with a perfect 4-0 record. Welker recorded technical falls in all four matches and outscored her opponents 47-6 combined. In the championship final, she dispatched returning U23 world bronze medalist Valeriia Trifonova, 10-0, in just two minutes.

Welker hasn't slowed down in 2026. She captured her third consecutive collegiate national championship, completing a perfect 21-0 season for Iowa. She then delivered one of the most impressive performances of her international career at the Senior Pan-American Championships in Coralville, Iowa.

Competing at 76 kg, Welker defeated two 2024 Olympic bronze medalists on her way to the final before pinning reigning senior world champion Genesis Reasco Valdez of Ecuador for the Pan-American title. Her performance earned Welker the Golden Boot as the tournament's outstanding women's freestyle wrestler.

Success at the senior level is nothing new for Welker. She is already a two-time senior world bronze medalist, earning bronze at 72 kg in 2024 before returning to the podium at 76 kg in 2025.

Now, Welker returns to the U23 stage in Las Vegas with a different kind of opportunity: a chance to make history.

Standing among the potential obstacles is Ukraine's Nadiia Sokolovska, the reigning U20 world champion. United World Wrestling has highlighted Welker and Sokolovska as a potential championship-final matchup at 76 kg, creating the possibility of a showdown between two reigning age-group world champions.

Welker enters the 2026 U23 World Championships aiming to become the first woman to win three consecutive U23 world titles and the first American to win three U23 world championships.

For a wrestler who has spent the past several seasons collecting championships and medals at nearly every level, Welker arrives in Las Vegas holding quite a hand.

All that's left is to see how the cards fall.
