COMBATIVE SPORTS LIFE
ART of BATTLE
CSL photographers submit art images from matside battles.
Motion and shape take precedence over technique and quick twitch. Creativity over journalism. Almost always, the art says more than the journalism ever could. The curve, the shadow, that shaft of light brings more to an image. Showing motion in a long exposure allows many moments to be shown at once. Art has always been able to show more than what was there.

Ricardo López Hevia, Cuba. Ricardo is a well-known, award-winning action photographer worldwide. His work shows a knowledge of movement and detail few have. In this piece, a long shutter speed allows the motion of the athletes to show and the photographer's sensitivity to such things.

AJ Grieves, Las Vegas, USA. AJ is a relatively new photographer. His work, however, shows a strong understanding of shadow and light. A nice balance of light and dark space makes this image both easy to look at and intriguing.

Bill Bain, Canada. Bill is a photographer first. His work shows a mastery of the craft. In this piece, the balance and composition say it all. Coach, athlete interaction, at its core.

Marion Stein, Germany. Marion is a wrestling photographer with an intimacy for the sport few have. Her pieces often have strong emotion and depth. You can feel the energy coming out of this image.

Robbert Wijtman, USA. Robbert is a well-known, award-winning action photographer. In this image, he slowed the exposure to emphasize the movement. The orange and blue colors contrasting nicely.
